Drew and Friends

We are catching up on the deferred spring maintenance work and were thrilled that our wonderful young friends Brittany, Dominique, Drew, Phoebe and Tiger once again offered to help for the day and also brought along their friends, Dalong and Holly.

The team arrived early in the morning and after a quick morning tea and catch up, we went to work.  Thomas gave a safety briefing and a description of the work planned for the day. The plan was to work on improving an old track that links the wetlands boardwalk to one of the main walking tracks.

The first step was to bring the gear down to the site.

The team had to clear and improve the old track by putting in side walls and realigning some of the old steps.  They started off by marking the planned route and layout of the track with string and went to work digging out channels for the side boards.

Once the channels were dug, the team measured and cut the boards to size.

The boards were then put into position and secured with pegs and nails.

There were also some steps along the track the team was working on and some of them were eroded or out of alignment, which the team had to fix.

They removed the old step risers and dug out new steps.

They then reinstalled the riser and boxed in the track section.

And the result is a straight track and with easy steps.

The final task was to smooth and level the track.

The team accomplished an amazing amount of work in just a few hours.  Here’s what the improved track looks like now:

Despite the hot and humid weather, the very enthusiastic and hardworking team accomplished a huge amount of work and have helped to create a nice looking and safe track that will be enjoyed and appreciated by visitors to CUE Haven for years to come.  Future teams will continue making improvements further along the track where it joins one of the main tracks.

And a very special thank you to Drew for organising yet another successful visit.  We really enjoyed spending time together and we so appreciate all your good ideas and hard work.  You have made a major contribution to the CUE Haven landscape and set a high standard for other teams to follow to complete the task.
