International Student Volunteers—June 4-7

June 8, 2012

This week we had a fun and enthusiastic group from International Student Volunteers to help move along our 2012 planting efforts.

The ISV team was led by Stephanie McLeod with the assistance of Dawn Gasparro of Conversation Volunteers NZ.  The team was our first All-American team and consisted of Kelsey, Sara, Erika, Paul, Dan, Amanda and Taryn.

The group arrived on Monday morning and after introductions, an orientation and lunch, they went straight to work.

First, Paul helped Tom deliver some trees up to the planting site:

And it no time, the team got started planting.

The area where we were planting was on a slope but the team managed with no problems.

The view out to the Kaipara Harbour from the planting site was great!

And it didn’t take long for the empty trays to start piling up!

On Tuesday afternoon the weather got nasty and the wind and rain up at the planting site made further work difficult.  The team moved down to the nursery and did some weeding of the new seedling trays and also did some weeding around the cottage so they were close to shelter in case a rain squall came along.

On Wednesday, Sarah, an environmental sciences student at Unitec, who is doing part of her practicum at CUE Haven came along for the day and joined the team for some planting.

In addition to hard work planting trees, the team also took the time to explore the walking track by day and night and also completed a jigsaw puzzle in just over two hours!

While Amanda made friends with a live frog who she named “Mr. Green.”

Taryn had hoped to find a Kiwi, but had to be content with the two dimensional version.

Before leaving on the last day the team took some time to plant memorial kahikatea trees in the wetlands for departed friends and loved ones.

And to celebrate their time in New Zealand, the group planted a Miro tree to commemorate “Good Friends and New Beginnings.”

We very much enjoyed working with this great team.  In just three days they managed to plant a little over 1,600 trees—a great effort!  You have definitely impacted your world and ours!

Thanks again!   We very much look forward to having you all back at CUE Haven.
