For several years, teacher David Walker brought his students from Murrays Bay Intermediate School on Auckland’s North Shore to CUE Haven for planting days and environmental education visits.
David is passionate about education and teaching young people about caring for our environment. He has just published a book for young people about caring for the environment, climate change and the importance of trees. This very engaging book is called Jack and the Trees and is the first in a series of adventure books.
The story finds Jack and his good friends caring about nature but finding themselves having to convince their elders that human progress at any cost is not really what’s best for people or nature. David weaves old Te Reo folklore and legend into the storyline. The story is packed with adventure and intrigue and the children are helped along the way by the very trees that face the chop!
We were delighted when David told us that part of the inspiration for the book was his students’ work at CUE Haven.

You can find out more about this entertaining and inspiring book and order a copy here.
We are also selling copies of the book to volunteers and visitors at CUE Haven as a fund raiser.
Congratulations again to David on his amazing accomplishment and we look forward to the rest of the books in the series!
