Rotary Club Community Planting Day—June 25
The Rotarians of the Mt. Roskill/Hillsborough Rotary Club have become supporters and friends of CUE Haven ever since they helped out with the Waikowhai Intermediate School TFS planting in August 2010. In February 2011 they sent a team to help with the nursery mural painting and today they sent a great team that planted almost 400 trees in a few short hours.
The planting team today comprised of Rotarians Alan, Craig, Luc, Maurice and Theresa, David –Theresa’s husband, Keshav – Mt Roskill/Hillsborough Rotary Youth Leadership Award recipient, and our friend, Kerry Johnstone.
The team arrived at nine and after morning tea and an update on what’s new at CUE Haven they went to work.
The planting area was a large section adjacent to the mature bush block. It was created when we relocated the main road running up the middle of the property and it was sparsely planted near the end of last year’s planting season.
In order to turn it into a rich bush area we wanted to fill in the gaps between the trees and today’s group achieved exactly that!
The weather was perfect for planting except for a short rain squall that blew through about halfway through the planting. A number of birds also stopped by to see what we were up to. Because we were so close to some of the most mature bush on the property we saw fantails and wood pigeons and were serenaded by a tui for most of the morning.
After we’d finished the planting several of the group walked up to the top of the property to enjoy the views (and wind) and then we all went down for a relaxing lunch.
Today’s planting was a major contribution to the CUE Haven revegetation effort. The area planted is a critical link between areas of mature bush on the property and forms an important anchor for future plantings.
Our many thanks to Alan, Craig, David, Luc, Kerry, Keshav, Maurice and Theresa for all their help and enjoyable company. We especially want to recognise Maurice’s efforts above and beyond the call of Rotary service—he is awaiting surgery for a broken shoulder but still insisted on helping out and planting trees—good luck for a quick recovery, Maurice!
The team made a major mark on the CUE Haven landscape and we look forward to having you back soon!
Great work on such a rough day, sad I was not able to join in on Saturday, looks like the planting was close to where we were planting last time I was there, am still keen to have another day on the “planting gang” when the opportunity arrises
Thanks, Doug! Sorry you couldn’t join us but we look forward to having you come out sometime soon! Yes, we were planting close to where you planted last year to fill in some gaps and link up with the big bush block. We can’t wait to show you the progress since the last time you were up.
