Community Walking Track Day—July 1, 2012
It was another fun but hard working day at CUE Haven as a group of energetic volunteers joined us to continue on with putting a layer of gravel on the walking track. Back in March, we finished building a 600 metre walking track along the gully stream and in May a group of volunteers came out and covered a good part of the track. Today’s group put down over 100 metres of gravel in a wet and winding part of the track and brought us to within less than 80 metres of finishing it off!
The volunteers arrived at about nine. The group was very mixed and few people knew each other, so everyone put on a name tag:
And everyone got a chance to get acquainted over morning tea.
After morning tea we went to work. We were working at the far end of the track, so everyone got a good workout walking up to the site.
The challenge was that because the track goes over hilly terrain, there are several sets of steps. As a result, we can’t use machines or even wheelbarrows to get the gravel down to the track. We had a big load of gravel delivered to the top of the track and Resene Paints had generously provided us with a supply of empty ten litre paint cans and that was how the volunteers would deliver the gravel to the track.
Some of the group handled shovelling gravel into the buckets:
But most of the group worked on the bucket brigade—bringing down bucketfuls of gravel two at a time and then passing empties back up for refilling. The biggest challenge was the long set of steps at the beginning of the track.
On the level sections of the track, things weren’t as crowded.
Our friend Kairus took on the job of raking and smoothing the gravel as the team poured it out.
After about an hour the team took a well deserved break to have some refreshing chilled Lemon & Peach Nestea generously supplied by Nestle.
When they went back to work they shuffled jobs in order to use a different set of muscles.
Shortly after noon it started to rain and we decided to call a halt for the day. The team made a major contribution to the walking track and it is more beautiful, safer and easier to walk than ever.
The group then took a leisurely walk back to the house. And cleaned up in the nursery.
Before heading to the cottage for a well-deserved and relaxing lunch.
We’d like to thank Resene Paints for providing the empty paint tins that the team used, as well as Winstone Aggregates sponsoring the gravel for the walking track.
And a big Thank you to Nestle New Zealand who generously provided Milo bars and Milo drink and assorted coffee and Nestea for everyone today. Thanks, Nestle!
But most of all today we want to thank the great group of volunteers who came out and braved the cold and wet weather and did physically demanding work.
Thank you Abhishek, Aiden, Ana, Anahita H., Anahita V., Ashok, Bilkish, Binaifer, Dylan, Felix, Fiona, Gabi, Harish, Homi, Hrishikesh, Huda, Isaac, James, Jarafshan, Jessica, John, Kairus, Kunal, Malini, Mauricio, Mohammed, Niki, Paeterasp, Rhitisha, Richard, Sammy, Samuel, Savita, Tehmus, Trish, Xerxes, Yazdy, Zach, Zach & Zarin.
The results of your hard work look fantastic and we are very proud of the track. You have made a major and long lasting contribution to CUE Haven. Your efforts this morning will be appreciated by everyone who visits CUE Haven over the years and walks the gully track
We hope you will come back soon to enjoy the walking track. Without carrying buckets of gravel! Thanks again!
